City of Lynnwood recently issued the following announcement.
A ceremony will be held on Monday, Mar. 7th at 1 pm for the unveiling of a new sign honoring our local veterans.
The public is invited to join in this ceremony which will be held near the intersection of 200th ST SW and 44th Ave W, to celebrate the newly installed Veterans sign, which lets residents and visitors alike know that our city is a Veteran friendly city and we honor our Veterans. This sign is the first of a series of signs that will be installed throughout the City in the coming year.
Almost a decade ago, former Mayor Nicola Smith created a Veterans Round Table, filled with Veteran service providers from all over the area. That Round Table launched an effort resulting in a wide variety of resources and programs for our Veterans and their families in Lynnwood and South Snohomish County.
“These signs are a visual pronouncement to those who see them, that Lynnwood, indeed, cares about its Veterans and we put them as a priority when considering programs and resources in our community,” said Lynnwood City Council Member and Air Force Veteran, Shannon Sessions, who was part of the original Veterans Round Table and still serves as the Veteran liaison to the City Council.
She added that this first, larger sign is the completion of the first phase of the Veteran signs and that phase two will include smaller signs with the same design being placed in a variety of locations along our city’s thoroughfares in the near future.
"The posting of these signs throughout the City are a humble display thanking our community of brothers and sisters in arms for their sacrifices, dedication to duty, and the defense of our great nation," stated Gary Walderman, Director of the local Heroes' Cafe and Air Force Veteran. "We remember: No one left behind, freedom isn't free, and we thank you for your service."
"Lynnwood has made a commitment to be a veteran-supportive community," stated Mayor Christine Frizzell. "It is our duty to honor those who served our country by ensuring that they are welcomed, valued, and supported in our community."
Our many thanks to the Heroes' Café, American Legion Post 37 of Lynnwood, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1040 of Lynnwood for their generous contributions which helped to inspire, design, create and install these signs.
