The driver of a stolen truck was arrested early Saturday after a confrontation with Mountlake Terrace police.
Officers were responding to a noise complaint about 5:30 a.m. Neighbors had reported a loud diesel truck idling in the 21300 block of 52nd Avenue W.
Patrol arrived and determined the truck was stolen. The driver appeared to be passed out behind the wheel.
Officers set up spike strips around the truck and blocked it in with patrol cars. When the driver woke up, he repeatedly rammed the truck into the patrol cars, despite all four of his tires going flat from the spikes.
As the ramming continued, officers used tactics meant to be less-than-lethal, including a powder form of pepper spray and a projectile rubber baton.
Additional police vehicles blocked the man's escape until he eventually surrendered.
Upon review of the incident, Mountlake Terrace Police Chief Pete Caw said that what happened further underscores the challenges of recent legislative reforms around police pursuits. He has been encouraging lawmakers to return the responsibility of pursuit policies to local authorities.
